I've never joined Twitter because its format funnels debate into nasty exchanges of shallow ideas, but sometimes it crops up on a Google search, as this did this morning with something from Paul Grondahl, former longtime Times Union reporter, current columnist for the paper and director of the New York State Writers Institute. The tweet, which I will put at the bottom of this post, is apparently copied to the TU's Opinion and overall editors, and alleges, without any evidence except from today's Orwellian and unconvincing editorial, that Tedisco "lied about his position on abortion." I guess that naïve editorial board just got buffaloed, and there's no need for the news department to look into anything. Nothing to see here, except for about the worst cluster[expletive deleted] collision of news and opinion in the service of ideology (pro-choice, in this case) that I've ever come across in local media. "Truth matters", indeed, and the truth is this was probably a mutual misunderstanding around code phrases like "reproductive health," with each side hearing what they wanted to hear. At any rate, there is no evidence to back up this smear from Grondahl:
Historic smack down by @timesunion editorial board of Sen. Jim Tedisco. For first time in the paper’s history, it rescinded its endorsement of Tedisco’s candidacy because he lied about his position on abortion. Bravo. Truth matters. @JayJoch @rexwsmith
