So New York will get Race to the Top funding in addition to the jobs bill money passed by Congress earlier this month. I don't fault New York's state and federal pols for taking the money, even though it can't keep coming forever. But it means the state's school districts, unlike hospitals and nursing homes, will have been largely protected from the ongoing economic crisis. Gov. Paterson drove through some cuts this year, but the federal money means most districts won't feel them that much (although the Albany city district is an exception, because of the way charter schools are funded). That will give Gov. Cuomo (or Paladino) all the more reason to focus on education next year as the prime target for necessary spending cuts.
