"As soon as the MTA mess is addressed, it's on to the next contentious battle in Albany: Mayoral control," reports Liz Benjamin this morning on her Daily News blog. That would be mayoral control of the New York City schools, a downstate issue like the MTA. The other big item on the Capitol agenda, at least according to the New York City newspapers which drive news coverage here, is gay marriage. It is favored by New York City liberals, including the three Democrats who are currently governor, Assembly speaker and Senate majority leader, and has previously passed the Assembly, but its fate in the Senate is uncertain.
Meanwhile, no one is talking about the continued decline of upstate, with its dairy farms being forced out of business, its disappearing industry and emptying cities. Sounds like an issue for 2010 Senate races upstate, where a few Democrats may be vulnerable, and for the gubernatorial campaign.
