The state Legislature is now holding three so-called session days per week. In June, it ramps up to four, then collapses from exhaustion before the end of the month and goes on vacation for the rest of the year unless called back into special session.
Today's Senate session was scheduled to start at 11, and Sen. David Valesky actually called it to order at 11:19. Most senators never showed up, but a few noncontroversial bills were passed by voice vote. Then, at 11:26, Sen. Jeff Klein's motion to adjourn was passed, with the Senate session set to resume at 5 p.m. Monday. I made a comment on the way out of the chamber to a longtime observer who replied with that old line: "It's a tough job but someone's got to do it."
Sure, there are other things they do, and maybe it's better that they do them, or just sample the lovely spring weather, rather than inflict more damage on New York state. Still, New York City straphangers and other metropolitan area public transit users might have appreciated their legislators coming up with an MTA deal before leaving for that nice long weekend.
