Seems that traffic and noise connected to GlobalFoundries are getting town officials exercised in Malta. You don’t want them to roll over for the company, but what did they expect to happen at the largest construction site in North America? What do they think will happen when GF builds a second chip fab, which most local officials are supporting?
I never supported the first GF plant in Malta — somewhere like Buffalo would have made a better site. But now they have one it makes sense to go for two, although the state subsidy will have to be lower this time around. America can use more manufacturing jobs.
But town officials need to embrace density downtown instead of legislating height restrictions and bigger setbacks there, and complaining about the Ellsworth Commons development. Their plan seems to be to encourage the new workers to drive in from elsewhere. If anyone thinks the traffic and sprawl are bad now, wait till that scenario plays out.
