Well, that's one way to look at today's Times Union story about how they're going to build a new football stadium which "will initially seat 6,000 and could expand to 24,000 in the future. There are plans to add suites and club amenities. ... The project will be funded through state-appropriated critical maintenance funds, capital funds, and private fundraising ... In September 2008, UAlbany said it would seek public funding for a projected $60 million, multipurpose stadium that would seat 10,000 to 15,000 fans. ... In April 2008, the state Senate and Gov. David Paterson rejected the Assembly's request for $36.5 million in the 2008-09 budget to build a 10,000- to 15,000 seat stadium on the UAlbany campus."
Meanwhile, the university's plan to gut humanities programs including languages may have been modified but not abandoned, although it's hard to tell from the nonexistent recent news coverage. Also coinciding with program cuts have been big raises for top SUNY administrators.
Nor does the local public educational system of rewards and results at the primary and secondary level inspire any more confidence.
The relative sidelining of athletics is one of the things I always gave SUNY credit for as compared to the big state schools in much of the rest of the country.
I'm sure those forced to pay higher tuition as a result won't be overly thrilled.
