Soares makes right call

Albany County District Attorney David Soares won office as a liberal opponent of the Democratic machine, but his decision not to prosecute a Bethlehem homeowner accused of mistreating a teen prankster will be popular with the middle-class, middle-of-the-road voter -- and is also right on the merits. I was dubious about Soares' out--of-county  steroids investigation, but impressed at his takedown of state Comptroller Alan Hevesi. His office also got a conviction in another middle-class Bethlehem case, the Porco ax murder. On Troopergate, his first investigation seemed part of the Spitzer cover-up, but after that governor left office Soares' renewed investigation of Darren Dopp brought us as close to the truth about the scandal as we've gotten, including direct evidence of Spitzer's involvement.
