At least I assume the AnswerNet pollster today was working for Andrew Cuomo's (unannounced) gubernatorial campaign. The poll included a test of four possible slogans for Cuomo:
"The independence to do what's right, the experience to get it done."
"Independent leadership we can depend on."
"Leadership that works for a change."
"Strength, independence, results."
The independence theme also included a question about whether the Democratic candidate should run on an additional ballot line, and there were questions about perceptions of Cuomo in relation to the powers that be in Albany, and how they should be dealt with.
They were also testing negative attacks against potential Republican candidate Rick Lazio. There was a confusing one faulting his property tax cap as not rigorous enough, and more direct attacks on his role as a lobbyist for banks and, back when he was in Congress, heading a committee that oversaw Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Steve Levy, another potential Republican candidate (although he's a Democrat), also got a mention -- as did declared noncandidate Rudy Giuliani.
The poll floated various positions a candidate might take, including abolishing the Board of Regents, supporting a constitutional convention, and the familiar Cuomo theme of government consolidation. It also asked about whether to let the current income tax increase on the rich expire as scheduled, whether or not to cap or freeze state spending and local property taxes. A couple of questions are likely to raise some eyebrows in the world of public employee unions: one asking whether a candidate should spurn their financial support, and another querying whether public employee salaries should be frozen for two years. Cuomo has been getting flack for not taking positions on how to plug the massive budget deficit, and I guess he's working on some answers to that.
Hello word!!!
