Today, the day after Dede Scozzafava suspended her candidacy in the 23rd Congressional District and the Republican establishment supposedly swung around to support Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman, there is nothing about the race on the Web site of the National Republican Congressional Committee. They haven't posted a "news update" on anything since Oct. 29. What's the matter, Republicans don't work weekends? The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's site is up to date with its spin on the race. A few short months ago, the NRCC's disastrous advertising campaign lost another safe Republican seat when Jim Tedisco was beaten by Democrat Scott Murphy. This isn't a matter of ideology but of basic competence.
Come to think of it, where is Tedisco, where is John Faso -- conservative New York Republicans who had backed Scozzafava? (I just called Tedisco and left a message. I've been trying to reach Sen. Hugh Farley for days.) Where's the state party? Hoffman has put something nice about Scozzafava on his Web site, but apart from George Pataki, who's campaigned with him, where is his establishment Republican support? It sure isn't coming from Scozzafava, who seems to be leaning the other way. Is the Republican Party really so dysfunctional that it can't or won't push Hoffman over the top?
Update: Yup, Scozzafava is now officially backing the Democratic candidate, Bill Owens. Where are other Republicans?
2nd update: Here's Rudy.
3rd update: Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham, an Independence Party member who supported Scozzafava, endorses Hoffman.
4th update:Jimmy Vielkind lists some Republicans, including Faso, now backing Hoffman. We'll see what they do.
Hoffman said something nice about Scozzafava after months of calling her slime?
Hehe... politics.
An interesting example of the nationalization of this race is that 'Dede Scozzafava' is the #4 In the News item in... The Los Angeles Times.

I think the GOP establishment is quite embarrassed by this whole episode, and they're too proud and out-of-touch to now fully support Hoffman. I bet a lot of them are secretly hoping Owens wins. They don't want to lose control of the party. That's paramount to anything else.

I fear you may be right, Luke, although if this poll is correct it won't matter:

But Brian Kolb and some other Assembly Republicans did put out statements last night backing Hoffman.

Ah yes, Assembly Republicans. A shinking example of the 'Ideological purity = electoral success' model that Hoffman and his supporters are pushing.

Assembly Republicans including Kolb were backing Scozzafava, who is one of them. That was lousy political judgment.
