From today's New York Times editorial: "In a rational system of medical care, there would be virtually no restrictions on financing abortions. But abortion is not a rational issue, and opponents have succeeded in broadly denying the use of federal dollars to pay for them, except in the case of pregnancies that result from rape or incest or that endanger a woman’s life."
Translation: We haven't been able to get rid of restrictions put in place by Bush-Reagan neanderthals, and recent opinion polls show slippage, which means there's no percentage in pretending to engage in rational discourse with these people -- the out-of-town rubes who question the public funding of abortion. As for those who would go further to question its legal status: Anathema upon them.
Well they were one of the head cheerleaders for the aggression against Iraq so their pro-life credentials aren't stellar.
