So Dennis Vacco (out of public office since losing to Eliot Spitzer in 1998), along with Al D'Amato (also out of office since losing to Chuck Schumer that year), Rick Lazio (out of office since losing to Hillary Clinton in 2000), George Pataki (who quit in 2006 to avoid losing to Spitzer), and Joe Bruno (who resigned in 2008, the same year the Republicans lost the Senate and he got indicted) are part of the all-establishment team backing Henry Wojtaszek over Ed Cox for state GOP chairman. (Plus, at a less exalted level, people like Jasper Nolan, Saratoga County Republican chairman, fresh off Jim Tedisco's losing congressional campaign.)
This is at the behest of Rudy Giuliani (out of office since 2001, lost to John McCain et al. last year). If Giuliani wants the GOP nomination for governor in 2010, nobody including Cox is going to seriously object. And he'd be better off with Cox than with Wojtaszek and this team of losers.
Update: See this update and correction posted Sept. 10, just before Wojtaszek conceded.
